Sasha Timan is a Russian-American independent writer, director, and producer. She is a graduate of UCLA’s MFA film production program, narrative track.
Originally from Moscow, Russia, Sasha had an established career as a TV journalist and news producer before attending UCLA, working in both Moscow and Washington, DC. From 2011-2014, she served as the lead producer for a prominent investigative documentary program in Moscow, dedicated to exposing corruption across various sectors of Russian society.
Sasha's narrative works explore themes of social justice and human rights, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by women and immigrants. Her films address issues such as cultural identity and assimilation, mental health, advocacy and activism. Through her storytelling, Sasha aims to foster empathy and understanding by showcasing the struggles and triumphs of individuals fighting for their rights and social justice.
Her short film The Holy Water has been featured in multiple film festivals in Los Angeles and internationally, winning the Best Student Film award at the LA Indies Film Fest and the Santa Barbara Film Awards. Sasha's thesis film Timelessness, currently in post-production, features the prominent Russian actress Darya Ekamasova, star of the 2024 Palme d’Or winner Anora.
Sasha is a recipient of the prestigious Adrienne Shelly Foundation and Lew Wasserman award.
Additionally, her documentary on Guantanamo prisoners was featured at the Amnesty International Annual Conference in San Diego in 2023.
In her free time, Sasha is interested in psychology, yoga and cooking. She is also a dedicated mother, raising her daughter and residing with her family in Los Angeles.
